Mosquito-borne Illness Update 8-28-24
In Massachusetts, mosquitos can transmit Eastern Equine Encephalitis (Triple E/EEE) or West Nile Virus (WNV) and can cause illness ranging from a mild fever to more serious disease like encephalitis or meningitis. Mosquitos are usually most active during dawn and dusk in the warmer months. On 8/27, Wellesley’s risk for WNV is in the "MODERATE” category for WNV (mosquito samples collected tested positive for WNV but no human cases are identified) and the "REMOTE" category for EEE (no mosquito samples have tested positive for EEE, and no human cases have been identified).
Protect yourself from bites by:
· Avoiding outdoor activities from dusk to dawn during peak mosquito season
· Wearing long sleeved clothing
· Using insect repellants when outdoors
· Using window and door screens
· Removing standing water where mosquitoes reproduce
